The Gateway Of India, Mumbai, one of the most popular tourist attractions of Mumbai, was built in the Indo Saracenic style. It was built to commemorate the visit of queen Mary and King George to Bombay, before the Darbar at Delhi in the year 1911. The foundation stone of Gateway Of India, Mumbai was laid on March in 1911 after the the final design sanction by George Wittet in 1914. The foundation work was complete by 1920.
It is one of the famous monuments of Mumbai. This is often the starting point of the sightseeing attractions in Mumbai. Some of the steps of Gateway Of India, Mumbai are submerged into the sea. This is also the stop for short cruise trips of Maharashtra.

The structure of Gateway Of India, Mumbai was built from reinforced concrete and Kharodi basalt, yellow in color. The central dome is 48 feet along the diameter and it is 83 feet high above ground.I The harbor front has been realigned, with a well planned esplanade to sweep to the center of town. The construction cost was around 21 lakhs which was mainly borne by India government. There was a plan for the approach roads but it did not succeed due to the lack of sufficient funds. Gateway Of India, Mumbai is now standing at an angle to the road, which leads to it.
